About Simpler Gifts Press and The Bro Halff Gallery
Simpler Gifts Press and The Bro Halff Gallery feature paintings, visual poetry, limited-edition prints, books, mobiles, sculptures, t-shirts, and other simple gifts by San Diego writer, painter, and sculptor Bro Halff. Most works are priced between $15 and $300; all are unique objects of beauty and imagination.
Bro Halffs writing and artwork have been described as:
Joyful and sensitive poetry...with a Haiku-like quality
that implicity tells us to seize the present moment.
Richard Hamburger, Artistic Director, Dallas Theater Center
[His] work...is impressive in its variety...
traces of e.e. cummings whimsicality are in his lines...
Robert Pincus, Art Critic, San Diego Union-Tribune
True, its Halff the watercolor artist and poet who sees beauty
in the countryside. But its Halff the seeker-of-kindness
who sees beauty in...people and...small town life.
Janell Cole, The Bismarck Tribune
Born in Texas in 1946, Bro Halff was educated at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he earned graduate degrees in creative writing and liberal arts. Inspired by the work of Mary Ellen Solt and other concrete poets, Mr. Halff began to write both traditional and visual poetry in the 1960s. In 1983, he moved to California, where he studied painting with Don Blaisdell.
Mr. Halffs works include watercolors of California and the Midwest, a collection of fiction and poetry, and numerous editions of lyrical and visual poetry. He also has authored two volumes of watercolors and writing about North Dakota. His books are held by the Art Library of the University of California at Los Angeles and the Rare Book Collection of the New York Public Library, among others. Mr. Halff lives in San Diego, California and Bismarck, North Dakota.
